Benefits to Cycling

We are a third of the way through 2023 and if you’re one of the many hopefuls still clinging to your New Year's resolutions about getting fit, why not consider adding cycling into your current routine? There are plenty of benefits to cycling and we’ve compiled a list to give you some motivation and help you stay on track.

It burns major calories

Cycling is a great way to kickstart weight loss or a great addition if you feel as though you have plateaued in your journey. In fact, a leisurely 60 minute bike ride can burn up to 500 calories for an average person. However there are some caveats to this as you must be doing actual work to burn some calories! If you find yourself coasting downhill and letting your bike do most of the work, try changing up your path to something a little more challenging. The more straight paths or hills the better as the constant pedaling will keep your heart rate up and burn more calories.

It is low impact

While being a major way to get your cardio in, cycling is also a very low impact sport compared to running. Many people get discouraged with age or injuries as our joints tend to wear down over time however, because cycling is a low impact sport, it is easier for those with knee or joint issues or those trying to avoid high impact workouts in general.

It is good for the environment…and your wallet

Choosing a bike over your car is a small way you can make a big impact on the environment. Unlike most cars, cycling emits zero gasses and contaminants into the air and also creates virtually no noise pollution creating a more peaceful and clean environment for those around you. Not only does biking to work, school, or on your daily activities create zero gas emissions into the environment, it also saves you money by not having to refill the tank quite as often.

It’s good for your physical well-being

Cycling may be one of the best cardio exercises you can do. Doing so regularly has been proven to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol as well as increased cardiovascular strength. Many studies have also proven that biking can increase mental alertness, decrease stress and improve your posture and coordination.
